The Großarltal is a genuine paradise for hiking enthusiasts. Thanks to the hotel's exclusive location, numerous hiking trails can be accessed directly from the doorstep, leading through picturesque landscapes and past traditional alpine huts. The valley's extensive and well-signposted routes make it an ideal destination for nature lovers. With its diverse flora and fauna and stunning mountain panoramas, every hike becomes an unforgettable experience. The numerous traditionally managed alpine pastureswhere hikers can enjoy regional delicacies and relax is a particular highlight. There are no less than 40 alpine pastures around our hotel, which is why the Großarltal is also often referred to as the "Valley of the alpine pastures".

Daniel Hettegger, a passionate tour guide and a member of the hotel’s founding family, knows these trails like no one else. With his parents occupied by their demanding work, Daniel took on the role of leading hikes for guests from an early age. To this day, he continues to guide visitors along the most scenic routes in Großarltal, ensuring every excursion becomes a unique experience.

DAS EDELWEISS offers guided tours for all levels of hikers. From leisurely trails suitable for families with children to multi-day hikes for experienced adventurers, there’s something for everyone. Daniel also knows a few secret spots off the beaten track, which he happily shares with guests. And of course, no hike is complete without a stop at a traditional alpine hut for an authentic Austrian snack – and perhaps a little schnapps to keep the spirits high.

“Hiking with our guests is always a great pleasure, and I’ve turned my passion into a career.”

Tour tips from Daniel

The sunrise hike to the SchuhflickerDepending on the season, the tour begins at 4 am at the hotel, where a taxi takes guests to the Aualm, just 20 minutes away. From there, the ascent to the summit of the Schuhflicker begins. On the way there you will find the Schuhflickersee. The crystal clear water and the beautiful nature is part of what makes the Großarltal so special for Daniel. "There is hardly a spring here that is not drinkable, the drinking water here comes from nature." Reaching the summit is an awe-inspiring experience, where the feeling of being close to the sky is truly magical. Watching the surrounding Alpine peaks bathed in the golden hues of sunrise is simply unforgettable.

Another highlight is the hike to the Hirschgrubenalm. This route features a relatively gentle path leading through an enchanting forest, covered with lush green moss. After a few rainy days, the trail is particularly popular with locals, as it often rewards hikers with the discovery of Eierschwammerl (chanterelle mushrooms)

When asked whether he ever gets bored of guiding hikes, Daniel has a clear answer: "Never! Every group is different, which makes every hike an exciting and new experience. It’s always great fun."
